Rugby is one of South Africa's most loved sports and is enjoyed by players throughout their lives - first in school, then in university and if they are really good, on a professional level. Rugby is also one of the sports with the highest level of collision and throughout a sportsman's playing career, he will be faced with several possible injuries from physical contact. A recent report revealed that dental injuries are one of the most prevalent in rugby.

This problem has been highlighted of late following reports that a mouth-guard was still not compulsory in South African rugby. Other countries where rugby is just as popular, such as New Zealand, have already taken steps to protect their players' teeth and have made mouth-guards a compulsory piece of equipment for every game. As of yet, this is still not the case in South Africa.

Yet, despite this fact, Dental Information Systems, a South African-based insurance institute has initiated a plan to cover all levels of rugby play. This plan is set to be endorsed by the South African Rugby Union and the South African Rugby Association and will most probably provide complete dental insurance to the country's national rugby team, amongst others.

Dental Information Systems have developed a system which will cover minor dental treatments such as chipped or fractured teeth, medium-size treatments such as knocked out teeth, and massive dental surgery, such as in the case of a jaw fracture.

Figures released by DIS show that the costs of dental treatment without insurance of any sort can be financially crippling. However, by simply making small contributions on a monthly basis to a comprehensive dental insurance plan, rugby players (and anyone else, of course) will be able to have the peace of mind that if they are unfortunate enough to face a knocked out tooth or jaw fracture, their medical fees will be covered.
