Don't assume that all car insurance offered is the same Ask questions before taking out insurance and save yourself a headache down the line

Knowing what to ask a car insurance agent is probably one of the
important steps in taking out this form of cover, says the Managing Director of
Alexander Forbes Insurance, Gari Dombo.
While most South Africans believe that "all insurers and their products are
pretty much the same", there is nothing further from the truth, warns Dombo. He
therefore suggests that customers make a list of very important questions to ask
potential car insurance companies before signing on the dotted line.
Some of the basic questions to ask include who is covered under the policy,
what parts are covered under the insurance, the amount of excess charged to the
policyholder, car hire options in the event of an accident and liability
insurance.
It is important to find out exactly who is covered under the car insurance
policy. "Is it just you, you and your spouse, or you, your spouse and your
licensed children?" said Dombo. "In short, does the policy limit drivers to
named drivers or include any licensed driver should this become necessary?"
In the event of an accident, it is important to confirm that the insurance
company will cover manufacturer approved parts. Dombo warns that if it doesn't,
the customer's car warranty could be jeopardized.
Another thing to ensure is that the insurance offers car hire options if an
insured car is in for repairs. "Many repairs take longer than 30 days,
especially when parts have to be imported or your vehicle is in for repair
during December or January," noted Dombo.
These and other important questions were imperative in order to obtain the
best car insurance cover.
