Shocking statistics revealed by the South African Police show that violent
crimes are unfortunately very much part of our day to day life, claiming more
and more victims each day.
Those who become victims find it extremely hard to function afterwards and
usually need some kind of counselling to piece their lives back together.
Fedhealth, the fourth largest open health scheme in South Africa has
recognized this problem and is offering its members a free Trauma Management
Program to assist them and their dependents in the normalization process.
"We felt it was our responsibility to connect with our members and their
dependents in their hour of need," said that Principal Officer of Fedhealth,
Peter Jordaan. "We have seen a growing interest in the program from our members
over the first six months of it being operational and we are pleased we can
offer this service."
Anybody who has fallen victim to road accidents, rape, assaults, family
violence and the like are able to use the complementary service.
69% of those who have used the service so far have been female members, with
the majority being in the 51-60 age group.
"The majority of trauma cases relate to armed robbery and the greatest
benefit is the opportunity to help diffuse the emotional trauma there and then
without having to wait for outside counselling," said Jordaan.
The program was designed by Independent Counselling and Advisory Services and
offers services such as psychological first aid to help reduce initial stress in
the immediate aftermath of an attack or accident.
48 hours after the incident, trauma counselling begins to help victims
through the problem when the initial shock wears off.
Practical assistance is also offered, such as providing physical necessities
and coordinating emergency services if need be.
