South Africans choose health insurance groups that offer no frills, good service and fast payouts This survey was done by Medshield.

South Africans were given until the middle of this month to change private
medical schemes without liability, and this move prompted the industry to
take a look at what consumers are really looking for in a good medical scheme.
Not surprisingly, 80 percent of South Africans said that the financial health
of a medical scheme was their top priority when choosing medical insurance, as
they needed to have peace of mind that they would be covered if and when the
need arose.
The survey was conducted by Medshield, one of the country's largest medical
schemes, earlier this year to determine what customers demanded out of their
insurance groups.
The survey also pinpointed what South Africans were not too keen about when
it came to medical schemes.
Only 35 percent said that they preferred additional paid benefits such as
discounts to movies, shops and shows, as well as gym memberships.
The majority of those questioned said that they were searching for a medical
scheme that offered comprehensive cover at competitive prices. These two factors
were among the most important to South Africans.
Other important features when choosing a medical scheme were the speed at
which claims were processed, especially when dealing with hospitalization.
Consumers also stressed the importance of communication between themselves
and the medical schemes.
