The South African Insurance Association (SAIA) has reiterated its support
to bring down the crime rates in South Africa by making a sizeable donation to
the Business Against Crime South Africa group.
The R1.8 million donation, which is the highest sum paid out by SAIA to date,
brings to R15 million donated by the group to the crime busting association
overall.
The Chairman of SAIA, Ronnie Napier said: "We are proud of our strenuous
efforts as an industry, which have greatly assisted in the general reduction of
motor vehicle crime.? Our focus now, with BACSA, is to reduce all crimes across
the board and to attempt to set a strong foundation for the future with crime
levels lower than the present unacceptable figures."
The association has been a driving force behind efforts to bring down the
high number of vehicle crime and road deaths in South Africa.?? Due to the
group's efforts, numbers have fallen from 17 cars per 1000 cars being involved
in theft or hijackings, to 8 cars per 1000.
SAIA has pushed for the introduction of Microdot Technology and has
introduced the Insurance Crime Bureau, which systematically fights insurance
fraud and corruption.
Long standing relationship
The latest donation seals a long relationship between the South
African Insurance Association and BACSA.
"BACSA and SAIA have a long standing and close relationship
dating back to the creation of BACSA in 1996," said BACSA chairperson, Yedwa
Simelane.
"This association yields tangible benefits for the insurance
industry, and the national effort to curb the scourge of crime, and is typical
of the strength of relationships that BACSA has with the many business sectors
and industries."
Simlane said that BACSA looks forward to continuing this
valuable partnership in their joint efforts to stamp out crime in South Africa.
