FirstRand Insurance offers a comprehensive and extensive range of financial services to South African consumers and corporate companies. The Group was established in 1988 through the merger of two of the larger financial players at the time - RMB Holdings and Anglo American and included such listed companies as First National Bank Holdings and Southern Life. The Group is one of the top 10 listed companies of the JSE Securities Exchange and employs nearly 44 000 people.

The vision in creating the FirstRand Insurance group was to form a group of companies that could offer an integrated and focused approach to financial services through its different member entities, backed by the financial capital and extensive expertise of the holding group. Each company within the Group operates as a profit centre with a specific financial strategy designed to serve its target customers.

A truly home-grown company, the 3 original founders are still actively involved in the Group management and this owner-manager philosophy is carried through to each member company within the Group. A core value across all companies within the Group is that people are its most vital resource and it encourages and cultivates a culture of entrepreneurship, accountability and ownership.

Because of the variety of member entities within the holding group, such as Momentum, Discovery, First National Bank and OUTsurance, there is an extensive range of financial services available to customers. Whether you are an individual or the owner of a large corporate, you can select the financial service you need from the group`s companies, with products such as personal insurance, asset and credit protection, legal cover, company and liability insurance, health cover, and income protection plans.

The Group`s target customers are South African consumers and companies and it does not currently have a specific financial target for international business. International service offerings are driven by individual business centres within the Group, in alignment with the individual company`s and the Group`s overall business strategy.

BEE AND CSI INFORMATION

The company fully adheres to BEE mandates and partnered with 4 BEE groups in 2005 - the Kagiso Trust, the Mineworkers Investment Trust, WDB Trust and the FirstRand Empowerment Foundation. These BEE partners were selected by the Group because of their shared values, strong reputations and profitable track records

FirstRand is also a member of The Business Trust, a partnership between companies and government that aims to stimulate job creation, skills transfer and capacity-building throughout all sectors of the South African economy. There is a focus on programmes that support the growth of the tourism industry and allied concerns such as crime prevention.

The group`s CSI commitments are managed through the FirstRand Foundation. The Foundation has a holistic approach to its CSI strategy and aligns its social development programmes to the national development agenda. It supports organisations and institutions that operate in the areas of education, primary health care, community initiatives, arts and culture and the environment. The Foundation also encourages FirstRand employees to become personally involved in community initiatives through the FirstRand Volunteer Programme.
