The potential of having an accident or being involved in crime are higher for
overseas visitors to South Africa than to most other countries in the world.
As such, Axa Insurance is warning the hundreds of thousands expected
to descend on the country during the World Cup tournament to take out proper
cover while abroad.
The Head of Travel at Axa Insurance, Alison Patrick said in a statement that
while having an insurance policy may not be able to stop an accident or crime
taking place, adequate cover would make the financial consequences easier to
handle.
Axa issued safety warnings to soccer fans, especially its target market - the
20,000 England supporters who are expected to fly out to back their national
team.
Axa Insurance said that fans should avoid carrying large amounts of cash or
valuables with them when they are out on the town or attending matches.
"Every year we see lives ruined by holiday misadventures with the worst of
these costing hundreds of thousands of pounds," said Patrick.
Potential threats include car jackings, smash 'n grabs and pick pocketing.
Health issues are also very important to remember, especially since AIDS is
such a prevalent disease in the country.
Axa said that policy holders should plan their trips well, avoid high risks
such as travelling alone and protect themselves accordingly.
When all is said and done, this year's World Cup promises to be as exciting
as they get, and with all the natural wonders of the country, there is no reason
why properly insured travellers should not enjoy themselves immensely.
