Whether you source your car insurance from a direct insurer (by telephone,
fax, in person or online), use an insurance broker, or use an online insurance
aggregator, they will all need you to provide certain information. This is in
line with the previous section where we explained how the cost of your insurance
is determined. So before you apply make sure you have this information
available, as it will speed up the process and minimise any to-ing and fro-ing.
- The make and model of your car
- The replacement value of your car
- The mileage on your car's odometer
- Any current damage to your car, and whether or not it has been in an
accident
- Your car license number and VIN (vehicle identification number)
- Your full name and ID number
- Your address
- The details of any other people who will regularly drive your car (if
applicable)
- The details of where and how your car is housed (in a lock-up garage,
behind automatic security gates etc)
- The date on which your drivers license was issued - and any endorsements
on it
- The security features of your car (like immobiliser, gear lock or
tracking system)
- Other extra features of your car (like power steering or electric
windows) - and any extras that you want to specify in the cover, like a car
radio
- What you use your car for (business, leisure etc)
- Your previous insurance history (who you were insured with, including
dates), including whether or not you have ever been refused insurance, and
why
- Your previous claims history
- Any accident history (if you have ever written off a car, for example)
- Any history of insolvency or financial judgements against you
- The type of policy you require (comprehensive, third-party only etc)
- Whether or not your car is still subject to a financing agreement - how
much the agreement was for, and how much you still owe
