The Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance in South Africa is an office for
mediation and arbitration on disputes between consumers and insurance companies.
You can lay complaints about your insurer with this office free of charge.
The office of the Ombudsman was established to provide free, informal and fast
resolution of policyholder disputes arising from rejected claims or claims that
have only partly been paid.
Note that you have to wait until your insurance claim has been fully dealt
with by your insurance company before going to the Ombudsman.
The Ombudsman uses the law and proper insurance practice relating to fair
dealing to resolve a dispute.
If your complaint is already the subject of legal proceedings you can't refer
it to the Ombudsman. If it is not the subject of legal proceedings and you refer
it to the Ombudsman, you can also at any point stop the Ombudsman's
investigation and take the matter to court.
